  3.     I have tried to understand the devotion of the Iranian
  4. people to the Ayatullah Ruhollah Khomeini (WORLD, June 12). He
  5. murdered thousands to consolidate his power during the
  6. revolution, and he sent hundreds of thousands to their deaths
  7. in the war against Iraq. He left his country an economic basket
  8. case. Yet his people seem desolate as they mourn his death.

  12.     To compare Khomeini with India's Mohandas Gandhi because
  13. both "mobilized spiritual forces for political ends" is
  14. asinine. Khomeini preached Islamic fundamentalism and tried to
  15. suppress opposition through savagery. Gandhi, by contrast, read
  16. from the Muslim Koran, the Hindu Bhagavad Gita and the Christian
  17. Bible. Moreover, the Ayatullah promoted his religious views
  18. through bloodshed; Gandhi preached nonviolence.
